Outdated Wedding Traditions #1: The couple can’t see each other before the ceremony
While the novelty of seeing your partner walk down the aisle on your wedding day has traditionally been the norm thanks to a long-held superstition, we think this should be a more intimate moment between the couple. Our twist to this tradition is to schedule a “first-look” photo shoot just before the wedding, where you and your partner, along with a photographer, snap some candid pictures as you lay eyes on each other for the first time on your wedding day. This not only helps you with any pre-wedding jitters, but it will also free up some time after the ceremony so you can mingle with your guests during the cocktail hour.
Outdated Wedding Traditions #2: The bride’s dress has to be white
How about no! Jessica Biel, Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne have all rocked coloured dresses on their big days because, you know, it was THEIR big day. Don’t let this tradition bog you down when you’re looking for your dream dress. Be open to champagne or pastel-hued dress, or if you’re really brave, follow Avril’s footsteps and rock a black stunner down the aisle.
If rocking a dress colour other than white is too much for you, add pops of colour with a sash, shoes or pieces of jewellery.
Outdated Wedding Traditions #3: Groomsmen are men and bridesmaids are women
Welcome to 2017, where we say “no way” to this tradition. If your best friend is male, and you want them to be a “Bridesman”, “Best Woman” or “Man of Honour”, then do it! Don’t fall into this trap that the gender of your friends dictates their role in your wedding. It’s your big day, celebrate it the way you want with your most important people by your side. If you’re worried about how they will fit in with the other bridesmaids or groomsmen, co-ordinate the bridal party’s look with bow ties or sashes.
